About this conversion
Tolkien measured Middle-earth in ordinary English units of his time, leagues, furlongs, fathoms and miles, rather than inventing new ones. A league is traditionally about 3 miles, which is how Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli's famous 45-league, three-day pursuit of the orcs works out to roughly 217 km, earning Aragorn the name “Wingfoot.”
Scholars note Tolkien wasn't perfectly consistent with his map scale (some passages imply leagues closer to 3 miles, others stretch further), so treat these as the standard real-world definitions he was drawing on, not a precision measurement of Arda.
Units supported: Fathoms, feet, furlongs, miles, leagues, kilometers.
Source note: Standard English units (1 league = 3 miles = 4.828 km), as used throughout The Lord of the Rings.
