About this conversion

Tolkien was fairly specific about relative heights in Middle-earth. Hobbits are described in the Prologue to The Lord of the Rings as standing between 2 and 4 feet tall, most commonly around 3 to 3.5 feet; Dwarves are consistently written as taller and stockier, averaging 4 to 5 feet; Men of Númenorean descent (like Aragorn, described as 6'6") run well above average modern human height; and Ents, Treebeard specifically, are stated outright to be at least 14 feet (4.5m) tall.

These are the ranges Tolkien himself described in the books and letters, not film-only estimates, though this converter uses representative averages within each stated range rather than a single named individual for hobbits and dwarves.

Units supported: Meters, feet, and average heights for Hobbits, Dwarves, Númenórean Men, and Ents.

Source note: Height ranges taken from the Prologue to The Lord of the Rings and Tolkien's published letters (Treebeard: “at least fourteen foot”).
